Project overview

WaterBear is a free streaming platform focused on sustainability. It offers documentaries and films on climate action, wildlife conservation, and social impact, with features that let viewers take real-world action like donating or volunteering

This project has been nominated for a Webby award for best streaming platform against Apple Music, Spotify, A24...

The problem

WaterBear, a live product, faced challenges with user engagement and retention. Many users would sign up, watch one specific piece of content, and then leave the app without returning. The goal was to create a more engaging experience tailored to their personas—activists and individuals striving for a more sustainable lifestyle—and to inspire users to take meaningful actions directly within the app.

This problem required a deep dive into user motivations and behavior to design solutions that kept users engaged while aligning with WaterBear’s mission of driving sustainability and action.

My Role

As the Product Designer, I worked with a team of design on new features that simplified user actions, such as donations and campaigns, and redesigned the platform’s navigation to be more intuitive and user-friendly. By refining key interactions and enhancing the overall UI which has successfully improved both user engagement and retention, ensuring a seamless and impactful experience for WaterBear’s audience.
